I played around with Lively a bit this week, wanting to kick the tires on Google's recent foray into the virtual world... um... world. All things considered, my initial experience was mediocre at best. Having used Second Life a bit, I found it more cumbersome to get around in - walking, sitting, and turning were a huge pain. While the interface and graphics are nice, the avatar customization is cartoonish and weak, the chat bubbles are obnoxious, and whenever I stood still my hands went straight to my hips in a pose eerily similar to Jack from Will and Grace. Isn't there a hot key to fix that? Heck, it took me about ten minutes to get my avatar into position to get the screen capture below. I'm being a little harsh, but there is a reason it's a beta release. I haven't given up on it, but will wait for a few more of the kinks to work themselves out before diving back in.
